Supermarket discounters are currently the fastest growing retail segment in Europe, according to the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO). For example, discounters like German companies Aldi and Lidl, both owned by The Schwarz Group, are forecast to grow by 5% and 3.5% respectively per year for the next five years. The success of these discounters is aided by corrugated shelf ready packaging, the trade group said. Over 90% of The Schwarz Group’s products use corrugated shelf ready packaging, compared with only about 40% of non-discounters. The packaging employs eye-catching designs and increases efficiency in the shelf replenishment process. The easy cost and time savings have made corrugated shelf ready packaging the number one choice for discounters, according to the report.
