Sustainability-focused packaging company Tetra Pak has launched a smaller package size for smaller households. Called the Tetra Brik Aseptic 500 Edge for its 500ml volume, this new carton is already being utilized by Austria-based dairy company Berglandmilch. In a statement, Tetra Pak attributed this new sizing to changing family sizes:

“By 2020, the average number of children globally per household is forecast to be 1, down from 1.9 in 1980. Single person households and couples without children are forecast to experience the highest rate of growth, almost doubling to top 330 million during the same period.”

Josef Braunshofer, managing director at Berglandmilch conceded, stating:

“In recent years we have witnessed a significant shift in the way consumers buy their milk—many more are looking for smaller pack sizes due to decreasing size of households.”
