A new report on the sustainability of aluminum cans from PE International shows several production improvements. It updates a previous study from 2010 and uses data from nearly all the can sheet producers and manufacturers in the U.S. And Canada in 2012. The report shows that the average aluminum can today:

  • contains 70 percent recycled content
  • is 2 percent lighter than 2010 and remains the lightest beverage packaging option available
  • requires 14 percent less energy to manufacture than it did in 2010, improving its carbon footprint by 20 percent

Heidi Brock, President and CEO of The Aluminum Association, told PackWorld:

“This new data reinforces the tremendous sustainability advantages when consumers choose to enjoy their beverage of choice from an infinitely recyclable aluminum can.”
