Scientists at Singapore’s A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) have reported that companies are in the process of developing a new shelf-life extending packaging. The concept behind this smart packaging technology is based around materials that both repel external oxygen and absorb oxygen that has already entered the packaging. The IMRE has also developed a smart packaging sensor that detects chemicals associated with a loss in freshness to better estimate expiration date and food spoilage. Yesterday the IMRE signed an agreement with major names in packaging across Japan and Singapore to begin testing this new material.
