Chattem/Sanofi has delivered a creative packaging design for the OTC debut of its Nasacort Allergy 24 HR Nasal Allergy Spray.

The packaging’s “N”-shaped thermoformed blister clearly displays the nasal spray bottles inside. To ensure that the labels are front facing, the bottles are positioned in the thermoform before the backing is sealed.

The OTC packaging features the same blue color of the prescription label in order to maintain brand equity. Its blue and orange striped sunburst graphic represents a day of relief from allergies as well as the product’s original prescription strength efficacy, according to Nancy Limback, manager of packaging innovation and development at Sanofi.

The packaging won a 2014 AmeriStar award from the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) and a 2015 Worldstar award from the World Packaging Organisation.

Worldstar explained the packaging’s impact on the overall OTC allergy category:

“With less than 1% share of the Rx Allergy Spray category and 0% brand awareness at launch, the Nasacort Rx to OTC switch is the core driver behind 8.3% growth rate of the $2.4 billion U.S. OTC allergy category. The launch increased shopper basket size, adding incremental dollars to the category.”
