Despite predictions that plain cigarette packaging would damage sales, new Australian research shows that packaging doesn’t influence consumer spending habits. As the world’s first country to turn plain cigarette packaging a reality in 2012, opposition by the tobacco industry predicted this move would result in the use of low-cost or illegal tobacco. Studies, however, have proven otherwise, as the 2,000 Australian smokers surveyed showed little change in their purchasing proclivities.
