In a sustainability initiative it calls, “Sharing Beauty With All,” L’Oreal has committed to growing its consumer base by one billion while reducing its environmental footprint by 60 percent from a 2005 baseline by 2020. Packaging is one area the company is examining in its reduction efforts.

L’Oreal used a tool – the Greenprint assessment – developed by label supplier Avery Dennison to identify sustainable packaging alternatives.

The Greenprint data revealed that a thinner, more lightweight label material than in current use would be more eco-friendly.

L’Oreal is now using Avery Dennison’s Global MDO substrate, which has reduced greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and post-consumer waste from 7 to 19 percent.
