As smart packaging technology becomes more widespread, opportunity for supplier-to-consumer information exchange is developing.
For consumers, smart packaging allows for instant and comprehensive product information. With the Internet at most consumers’ disposal while shopping, this information can include product and ingredient details, promotional offers, tutorials, healthy and safety information, and more. Such available resources are instrumental in increasing the consumer’s ability to make wholly-informed decisions at the point of purchase.
In a recent Guardian article on smart packaging advancements, packaging manufacturing company Avery Dennison is cited for its Near Field Communication labels. This label allows consumers with NFC-equipped smartphones to access all kinds of product details by simply tapping the phone to the package—no app necessary.
