Strange as it may sound, edible packaging made from dairy and plants may soon be an option for companies looking to be more eco-friendly. Agricultural scientist Peggy Tomasulu’s early ventures into dairy-based packaging solutions were first noted by the USDA in 2010, and her research suggests casein and whey packaging have great potential. At the same time, European research project Wheylayer is experimenting with alternative solutions for edible packaging. Such materials include corn and soy.
