According to an article in The Telegraph, European demand for corrugated cardboard is increasing. Smurfit Kappa Company has released research that predicts two percent growth in the volume of packaging for the remainder of 2014.
The article cites online shopping as a reason for this rise. Another reason suggested was the rise of smaller family units leading to an increasing volume of ready-made meals. This new family structure has also resulted in a decline in previously-noted large weekly shopping trips and a shift towards convenience store grocery shopping. Finally, the necessary transport of fresh foods over long distances will result in greater use of plastic and boxes.
